Solar paint was developed by American scientists in early 2012. This special paint is made of nano-particles (ie, quantum dots) that generate electricity. Quantum dots are crystalline semiconductors ranging in diameter from about two nanometers to ten nanometers, with optical and electrical properties. As long as the paint is applied to the exterior of the house, electricity can be generated by exposure to sunlight, powering the appliances in the house, and the price is much cheaper than solar panels. However, the photoelectric conversion rate of solar paints has not reached the optimal state, and scientists still need to continue to improve. It is currently known that the best solar energy conversion efficiency of solar paints is only 1%, which is far lower than the typical conversion efficiency of commercial silicon solar cells of 10% to 15%.
